Relieve back pain and posture problems with a breast reduction
In the media, a full bust is often portrayed as attractive and a sign of femininity. For many women, however, it is not uncommon for it to be a physical and emotional burden and to cause problems such as posture problems and back pain. Things like sports or physical work become a struggle because of the voluminous bust and are often painful. On top of that come unpleasant looks and comments and the fruitless search for clothing that fits well. Many affected women therefore wish for a reduction of their bust size.
To reduce the volume of the breast while giving it an attractive, pleasing look, a surgical breast reduction (mammoplasty) is a good option. During the procedure, the breast tissue is surgically reduced, the breast is lifted, and it is reshaped into a feminine, round form.
At our practice for plastic and aesthetic surgery in Frankfurt, reduction mammoplasty is one of the frequently performed procedures. Dr. Nichlos places great value on aesthetics and shapes your new breast so that it harmonizes well with your body. The best thing to do is to schedule a consultation right away!
What is a breast reduction (mammoplasty)?
In breast surgery, breast reduction is used to surgically reduce a very voluminous bust and reshape the breast in the process. The reason is less often appearance and more often the physical and emotional problems patients experience because of the weight or size of the breast.
During the operation, excess glandular and skin tissue is removed, and the breast is then reshaped into the form you want. The goal of this procedure is smaller, lighter breasts that cause fewer problems and give you a positive body image again. If your breasts are of different sizes, read our guide Uneven breasts: What helps with breast asymmetry.

What are the benefits of a breast reduction in Frankfurt?

Specialist for breast reduction in Frankfurt
Dr. med. Emmanouil Nichlos has specialized in breast reductions for over 17 years and has extensive experience in aesthetic and functional breast surgery.
With precise surgical methods, Dr. Nichlos achieves a harmonious breast shape. At the same time, the operation can bring physical relief. Dr. Nichlos personally looks after freshly operated patients. In the first 24 hours after the operation, he is available to them for questions or problems.
What are the reasons for a breast reduction?
The reasons for a breast reduction vary widely. Many women have suffered from a full bust since puberty. For others, their breasts only became a problem after a pregnancy. Most patients come to us for the following reasons.

What breast reduction methods are there?
In plastic and aesthetic surgery, there are various surgical techniques, or incision techniques, that work well for a breast reduction (mammoplasty). Which of them is used in an individual case depends, among other things, on the extent of the desired reduction.
O-incision (Benelli method)
The O-incision, or Benelli method (named after its inventor, the surgeon Dr. Benelli), is a circular incision around the areola. Through this relatively short O-shaped incision (hence the name), Dr. Nichlos can remove a small amount of excess tissue along with skin from the breast. However, reshaping the entire breast is not possible with this technique. It is therefore only suitable for mild breast reductions.
I-incision (Lejour method)
The I-incision (or the method named after the surgeon Dr. Lejour) is suitable for a large excess of skin and tissue. In addition to the circular incision around the nipple, Dr. Nichlos makes a vertical incision that runs from the lower edge of the areola to the inframammary fold.
Together with the circular incision, it looks like an “i,” which is where the method gets its name. With this combined incision pattern, the specialist can achieve a significant volume reduction of up to 500 grams and reshape the breast according to your wishes.
T-incision (Strömbeck method, anchor incision)
The T-incision (or Strömbeck method, named after Dr. Strömbeck) is the method of choice for very large breasts and a pronounced excess of skin. Here, a third incision is added to the circular incision around the nipple and the vertical incision to the inframammary fold. It runs horizontally along the inframammary fold, resulting in a T-shaped incision pattern. The pattern also resembles an anchor, which is why this method is also called the “anchor incision.” It allows the greatest changes of all surgical techniques.
L-incision
A simplified variant of the T-incision is the so-called L-incision, in which Dr. Nichlos makes the horizontal incision in only one direction instead of both. The incision pattern then looks like an L, which also allows relatively large changes as part of the breast correction.
Can a breast reduction be combined with other procedures?
Yes, that is possible. If you want to have several areas improved anyway, it even makes sense, since a combined procedure requires only one anesthesia and also shortens the healing time. At our practice, we often perform breast reduction together with the following procedures:
Liposuction
If you also have bothersome fat deposits in other areas of the body, they can be removed directly when combined with liposuction (liposuction). Dr. Nichlos can, for example, suction fatty tissue from the flanks, upper arms, thighs and back in the same session and so harmonize your silhouette.
Tummy tuck (mommy makeover)
If the skin on both your breasts and your abdomen has become lax after a pregnancy, a combination with a tummy tuck is a good option. By combining the two procedures, Dr. Nichlos can achieve a very cohesive overall result.
Good to know: If you wish, breast reduction can also be combined with other procedures such as an eyelid lift or an arm lift. Dr. Nichlos will be glad to discuss with you in a personal appointment whether and which combinations make sense and are possible for you.
What happens before the breast reduction?
Before your breast reduction in Frankfurt, you first come to our practice for a thorough medical history and examination of your breasts. You then meet with Dr. med. Nichlos for a personal consultation. In a relaxed atmosphere, you can explain to the plastic surgery specialist your reasons for wanting a breast reduction and describe in detail what the ideal final result, your dream breast, looks like for you.
During the consultation, Dr. Nichlos explains which surgical options are suitable for your specific case. Once the best surgical technique for you has been found, he explains the exact course of the operation and what you need to pay attention to before and afterward to achieve a good result. For example, it is important that you maintain your desired weight for some time before the procedure. Strong weight fluctuations after the procedure can affect the result of the operation.
The cost is also discussed during the consultation. A flat amount can usually not be given because of the very individual circumstances. We therefore prepare a detailed cost estimate for you after the consultation appointment. You can use it to check a possible reimbursement of the costs by your (private) health insurance.
Important: Smoking (including e-cigarettes) increases the risk of complications such as circulatory or wound healing disorders. Please stop smoking, or at least refrain from it for 2 weeks before and 3 weeks after the surgery.
Breast reduction in Frankfurt: How does the surgery work?
The operation takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours and is performed by us under general anesthesia at our affiliated clinic in Frankfurt am Main. After the anesthesiologist has induced anesthesia and the surgical area has been thoroughly disinfected, Dr. med. Nichlos first makes the necessary incisions and then removes the appropriate amount of breast and glandular tissue, depending on the initial size and the desired final size. This is usually 200 to 1,500 grams per breast.
The specialist then tightens the skin and reshapes the breast according to your wishes. The nipples often also have to be reduced in size and/or repositioned. In some cases it is necessary to suction off excess fat in order to bring the breast into the desired shape.
Good to know: Suture removal is no longer necessary because of the self-dissolving sutures. A drain is not needed.
Immediately after the reduction, the breast is still swollen. It takes a certain amount of time for this surgery-related swelling to subside. In our experience, the final result is visible after about 3 to 6 months. To support the healing process, we ask you to attend your follow-up appointments with us and to follow our aftercare instructions.
Healing after the breast reduction: What to keep in mind
In the first week after the operation, you should definitely allow yourself plenty of rest and take it easy physically. Most of our patients are back to social life the next day, and after 1 to 2 weeks (depending on the type of work) they are also able to work again.
For good healing, it is important that you do not lift heavy objects for the first 4 to 6 weeks and that you wear a compression bra for 6 weeks. During this time you should also avoid sports and physical exertion so that the result can stabilize. From experience, it is also advisable to sleep on your back with your upper body slightly elevated in the first weeks after the reduction mammoplasty.
The scars from the operation, still visible at first, fade over time, which you can actively support with good scar care. During aftercare, we are happy to give you further tips and information on how to reduce the visibility of the scars even more.
What are the risks of a breast reduction?
Like any operation, a breast reduction carries certain risks and can cause complications. These include bleeding or postoperative bleeding, wound healing disorders and infections. However, these risks can be reduced by choosing an experienced specialist in plastic surgery such as Dr. Nichlos and by adhering to strict hygiene standards.
In addition, a breast reduction can lead to a loss or reduction of sensation in the nipples. At first, swelling and bruising can form in the surgical area. In some cases a feeling of tightness may also occur, which subsides again after some time.
At your consultation before the operation, Dr. Nichlos will inform you about the risks and possible complications, from anesthesia to the procedure itself.
How much does a breast reduction cost in Frankfurt?
What is included in the price?

Many patients want to know before treatment what costs are associated with a breast reduction. Since every operation is planned individually, the exact price can vary depending on the initial findings, the extent of the operation and the desired breast size.

- Breast reduction: from €7,500

Frequently asked questions about breast reduction in Frankfurt
Is a breast reduction painful?
In Frankfurt, breast reduction is performed under general anesthesia. With general anesthesia, you feel nothing during the procedure. After the operation, wound pain can occur, which can usually be managed well with mild pain relievers.
What is the difference between a breast reduction and a breast lift?
In a breast reduction (mammoplasty), excess glandular and fatty tissue is removed to reduce the volume and weight of the breast. A breast lift, by contrast, tightens skin and tissue without significantly reducing the breast volume.
Can sensation in the breast change after the procedure?
After a breast reduction, sensation in the breast or nipple may be temporarily reduced. In most cases this returns to normal after a few weeks or months. Permanent impairments are rare.
Will visible scars remain after the procedure?
Depending on the incision technique, fine scars can form that fade well over time. With proper aftercare and scar care, they are usually inconspicuous and completely covered by clothing.
Is a breast reduction also possible for very large breasts?
Yes, a surgical reduction is also possible in cases of pronounced macromastia (very large breasts). Particular attention is paid to a stable shape, a symmetrical result and preserving the nipple area.
When am I back to social life after a breast reduction?
As a rule, patients are able to manage everyday activities again the next day. Light physical activity is usually possible after two weeks. You should avoid sports and strenuous exertion for about 4 to 6 weeks.
Can I still breastfeed after a breast reduction?
After a breast reduction, the ability to breastfeed may be limited because glandular tissue is removed. In some cases milk production is reduced, especially if a lot of glandular tissue is removed. We therefore recommend having the procedure done once your family planning is complete.
How long does the result of a breast reduction last?
The result generally lasts for the long term. However, weight fluctuations, pregnancies or the natural aging process can change the shape of the breast again over time.
Does health insurance cover the cost of a breast reduction?
Dr. med. Nichlos has no statutory health insurance accreditation. Billing through statutory health insurance is therefore not possible, even when there is a medical indication.
From what breast size does a breast reduction make sense?
There is no fixed limit. What matters is your symptoms, such as back, neck and shoulder pain or limitations in everyday life, and not a particular cup size. In the consultation, Dr. Nichlos will clarify whether a reduction is an option for you and how much tissue should be removed. You can read more about sizes in our article Which cup size is right for me?
Is a breast reduction major surgery?
Breast reduction is a larger procedure and takes place under general anesthesia. As with any operation, bruising, swelling or wound healing disorders can occur. Dr. Nichlos will discuss the risks with you in detail beforehand.
