Nipple correction for a harmonious appearance
For most women, a beautiful breast includes fitting nipples and areolas that are neither too large nor too small and blend harmoniously into the overall picture. By nature, however, nipples and areolas are not always ideal. Nipples can be larger, longer or even turned inward (inverted nipples), and the areolas can be asymmetrical. Medically, this is generally unproblematic. Sometimes, though, the disproportion bothers the sense of aesthetics, or the shape causes friction and inflammation.
A nipple correction (mamilloplasty) in Frankfurt can offer a solution in these cases. In this comparatively small breast surgery, Dr. med. Nichlos can adapt the shape and size of the nipples and areolas to your ideas and thus help you feel better in your body. Schedule a non-binding consultation now.
What is a nipple correction?
Nipples and areolas can show congenital malformations or changes that give rise to the wish for a correction. In plastic and aesthetic surgery, the nipple correction (mamilla correction) is available to us at our practice in Frankfurt for this purpose.
In this surgical procedure, nipples perceived as too large or too long, overstretched or naturally large areolas, and also inverted nipples can be adjusted to your own aesthetic ideas. The goal of the treatment is to create a harmonious overall picture of the breast, nipples and areolas in which patients feel comfortable.

What are the benefits of a nipple correction in Frankfurt?
What reasons speak for a nipple correction?
Both aesthetic and medical ones, although the majority of women treated by us in Frankfurt am Main choose a correction for cosmetic reasons. In individual cases, however, these can vary greatly. Our patients most often wish for:
- a reduction of nipples or areolas perceived as too large
- a correction of congenital malformations such as inverted nipples
- a visual balancing of asymmetrical nipples
Even if the breast has changed over the years, for example through loss of volume or loose skin, the wish can arise to have the appearance harmonized surgically through a nipple correction and thus increase your own well-being and self-confidence.
Aesthetic and medical reasons sometimes cannot be clearly separated, or sometimes both apply. For example, if you do not like the look of your large nipples and they also cause discomfort, such as becoming irritated when you wear tight clothing. A nipple correction can also be necessary after injuries or breast cancer surgery.

What methods does plastic surgery offer for a nipple correction?
The choice of method always depends on the type of correction desired and the breast size. In Frankfurt, Dr. Nichlos offers the following nipple corrections, among others:
Inverted nipple correction
With this procedure, we can make the inward-turned nipple (also called an inverted nipple) protrude outward. To do this, we sever the bands of connective tissue that pull the nipples inward. If necessary, affected milk ducts are also included.
Nipple reduction
In this surgery, Dr. Nichlos visually reduces the nipple by removing excess tissue. In doing so, he matches the height and diameter of the nipple to the breast and tightens the remaining tissue so that the relationship between breast and nipple looks harmonious. This procedure can be performed, for example, as part of a breast lift.
Areola reduction
To reduce areolas perceived as too large, we remove a ring-shaped strip of skin around the areolas in order to reduce their diameter. Here too, it is important that the proportions between breast and areola are right. The areola correction is often combined with a breast reduction or breast lift, as this achieves a particularly harmonious result.
Nipple augmentation / nipple reconstruction
If the nipple looks too small (naturally or after a breast augmentation), we have the option of padding it with hyaluronic acid injections to make it look larger, or of using your own tissue or implants. The reconstruction or rebuilding of the nipple after breast cancer surgery proceeds similarly.
What happens before the nipple correction?
Before any treatment, we always offer a personal consultation in a relaxed atmosphere at our practice in Frankfurt am Main. Here, Dr. Nichlos looks at your nipples and talks with you about your wishes and, if applicable, any discomfort. After an examination, he can tell you exactly whether your ideas can be achieved with a nipple correction and what realistic result you can expect from the treatment.
In the preliminary consultation, the specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery explains the exact procedure of the surgery as well as possible risks and side effects. You can of course ask questions at any time. Please also tell us whether you have any pre-existing conditions or take medication regularly. If applicable, you must stop blood-thinning medication 10 to 14 days before the surgery, in consultation with the doctor. If possible, also avoid alcohol and nicotine before the procedure. Beyond that, no special preparation is required for the nipple correction.
Nipple correction in Frankfurt: How does the surgery work?
On the day of your appointment, you come to us on an empty stomach at our affiliated private clinic in Frankfurt. After brief preparation, you receive a local anesthetic (local anesthesia), and if needed twilight sedation in addition. General anesthesia is usually not necessary. Dr. Nichlos will discuss the details with you in the preliminary consultation.
The further course of treatment varies depending on the goal of the nipple correction. The differences between the individual surgical techniques lie in the incision. In a nipple reduction, for example, a wedge-shaped incision is made in the middle of the nipple, while for a correction of the areolas Dr. Nichlos makes a circular incision around the areola. He then removes the excess tissue and sutures everything neatly. Depending on the technique, the procedure takes 30 to 90 minutes.
The correction of inverted nipples is a special case. Here the specialist must sever the bands of tissue that pull the nipple inward. Only then does the nipple protrude outward. So that it stays in its new position, he closes the wound with a special technique.
After the procedure, we protect the treated area with a special dressing. You can go straight home and are usually back to social life immediately, but you should follow our aftercare / rest instructions without fail.
Aftercare after the nipple correction: What to keep in mind
As with all procedures in breast surgery, good aftercare is extremely important for the nipple correction. After the surgery, you will receive detailed tips on how to behave from us. These include that you:
- keep the treated area clean and dry for a few days and cool it gently
- take it easy physically in the first days after the procedure
- avoid bathing, swimming and saunas for 3 to 4 weeks
- also avoid sports for 2 to 3 weeks
In addition, we recommend that you begin special scar care once Dr. Nichlos has given the go-ahead. It supports healing and the reduction of swelling in the tissue and ensures that the traces of the surgery fade more and more.
What are the risks of a nipple correction?
In principle, every surgical procedure carries certain risks. This also applies to a comparatively small procedure like the nipple correction. After a surgery, for example, the following can occur:
- slight pain and tenderness
- tingling or numbness
- swelling and bruising
These usually occur only temporarily and disappear on their own after a few days to weeks. In very rare cases, the following can also occur after a nipple correction:
- postoperative bleeding
- infections and wound healing disorders
- wide and raised scarring
- loss of the ability to breastfeed (with inverted nipples)
- loss of sensation
It is all the more important to turn to an experienced doctor for aesthetic plastic surgery such as Dr. med. Nichlos for such operations, who performs procedures like these regularly and also ensures that hygiene guidelines are observed. This helps reduce risks.

Frequently asked questions about the nipple correction in Frankfurt
What are inverted nipples?
Inverted nipples are a breast malformation characterized by nipples that are drawn inward. They are medically harmless but often an aesthetic problem for those affected. The cause is usually shortened bands of connective tissue or milk ducts. These prevent the nipples from protruding outward and pull them inward instead. Inverted nipples are harmless and genetic. Only in rare cases can they be a sign of a disease. The latter must always be considered when the nipple only draws inward over time.
How long do I have to avoid sports after a nipple correction?
That depends entirely on the extent of the nipple correction and the type of sport. As a general rule, Dr. Nichlos advises avoiding sports for about 2 to 3 weeks after a nipple correction. You will receive specific recommendations after the surgery.
Are there scars after a nipple correction?
Every incision leaves a scar. Depending on the type and incision of the nipple correction, it can run differently. In general, however, we take care to place the incisions in the most inconspicuous places possible so that the scars are hardly visible later. With early and consistent scar care, you can influence scar formation positively. Dr. Nichlos will personally explain exactly what to pay attention to.
Does the nipple correction affect the ability to breastfeed?
That depends. With a simple nipple reduction or correction of the areola, the ability to breastfeed is usually not affected. With a correction of inverted nipples, however, the ability to breastfeed can in rare cases be impaired, for example if the milk ducts are severed during the surgery. For this reason, we advise having such a procedure only once you have completed your family planning.
Does the surgery change the sensitivity of the nipples?
After nipple surgery, the sensitivity of the nipples can change temporarily. They can be both more sensitive and less sensitive. In most cases, however, this changed sensitivity is only temporary and returns to normal in the following weeks. It is possible for the changes to remain permanently, but this is rarely the case.
Can the nipple correction be combined with other breast surgeries?
Yes, for example with a breast reduction or a gynecomastia surgery. Whether and how the procedures can be combined, you discuss in advance with Dr. Nichlos.
Does health insurance cover the cost of a nipple correction?
Dr. Nichlos does not have statutory health insurance accreditation and bills privately. Billing with statutory health insurance is therefore not possible. Whether private insurance covers the cost in full or in part, please clarify in advance with your insurer. The cost starts at €2,300 plus anesthesia and clinic, more under Pricing.
Is reconstruction of the nipple possible after breast cancer surgery?
Yes, reconstruction of the nipple after breast cancer surgery is among the procedures Dr. Nichlos offers. It proceeds similarly to nipple augmentation; depending on the findings, hyaluronic acid injections, your own tissue or implants come into question. Dr. Nichlos will clarify which approach suits you after an examination in the consultation.
