Correcting hooded eyelids with Dr. Nichlos: an alert look through blepharoplasty

Do you look tired when you glance in the mirror, even though you feel fit and fresh? Common reasons for this are drooping upper eyelids (so-called hooded eyelids), eye bags and dark circles. They often wrongly make the face look worn out, grumpy or sometimes even sad, and in some cases can cause medical problems such as a restricted field of vision.

As part of an eyelid lift in Frankfurt, Dr. Nichlos can gently remove the excess skin from your eyelids, tighten the area around your eyes and so give your face a vital, alert and friendly expression again. Schedule a personal consultation at our practice now and get informed about the options with no obligation!

What is an eyelid lift?

The eyelid lift (medical term: blepharoplasty) is a procedure frequently performed in plastic and aesthetic surgery in which excess skin, fat and muscle tissue are removed from the eyelids. The aim of the operation, also called eyelid surgery or simply lid surgery, is a fresher and more alert appearance of the eye area. More on this: upper eyelid lift for hooded eyelids, lower eyelid lift for eye bags and dark circles.

Specialist for eyelid lifts in Frankfurt

Dr. med. Emmanouil Nichlos has specialized in eyelid lifts for over 17 years and has extensive experience in aesthetic eyelid surgery.

With precise techniques and a trained eye for the eye area, he achieves an alert, fresh expression and natural-looking results. Dr. Nichlos personally looks after freshly operated patients. In the first 24 hours after the operation, he is available to them for questions or problems.

What are the reasons for an eyelid lift?

The majority of patients come to us for aesthetic reasons with the wish for an eyelid lift. Often hooded eyelids and/or eye bags, loosened due to genetics, the aging process or external influences such as frequent sun exposure, make those affected look more tired and older than they actually are. Accordingly, these patients strongly wish for a visual change that better suits them and their inner feeling.

Less often, an eyelid lift is performed for medical reasons. This is the case, for example, when the field of vision is restricted by severely drooping upper eyelids or eye bags, or when eyelid closure is impaired. For both aesthetic and medical causes, plastic and aesthetic surgery can help reduce symptoms with an eyelid lift and make the eye area look more alert and friendly again.

Which methods does Dr. Nichlos use for eyelid correction?

In principle, two types of eyelid lift can be distinguished: upper eyelid lift and lower eyelid lift. Dr. med. Nichlos performs both variants in the operating rooms of our affiliated clinic in Frankfurt, individually or, if needed, in combination.

The upper eyelid lift is used when the skin of the upper lid has loosened and hangs down as a result.

More on this on our page about the upper eyelid lift.

If patients suffer from pronounced eye bags or loosened eyelid skin, a lower eyelid lift is an option.

More on this on our page about the lower eyelid lift.

Good to know: In some cases, combining it with a lift of the eyebrows (brow lift) also makes sense, for example when they have sagged considerably and visually make the eye area smaller or obstruct the view.

What happens before the eyelid lift?

Before the eyelid lift, you can tell Dr. Nichlos in a relaxed atmosphere exactly what bothers you about your eye area and what result you would like to achieve with the eyelid lift. The specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery will advise you whether the changes you want can be achieved better with an upper eyelid lift or a lower eyelid lift, or whether a combination of the two may be the better choice for you.

During the consultation, Dr. Nichlos can also show you before-and-after photos of corrections already carried out successfully, so that you can get a better idea of the surgical possibilities and, of course, of the surgeon’s experience.

It is important that you know the exact course of treatment and know what to watch out for before and afterward. Dr. Nichlos will therefore explain the exact course of the procedure to you and inform you about possible risks and complications. An eye examination by an ophthalmologist may be necessary before the eyelid correction; we will inform you about this during your consultation.

Please also tell us at the appointment about any existing medical conditions and medication you take regularly. It may be necessary to stop some of them temporarily (e.g., those with a blood-thinning effect) in consultation with Dr. Nichlos.

Good to know: The upper eyelid lift starts at €2,900, the lower eyelid lift at €3,000 (all prices on the pricing page). After the consultation, we prepare a cost estimate that clearly lists all costs.

Procedure

Eyelid lift in Frankfurt: How does the surgery work?

The eyelid lift is usually performed on an outpatient basis in the affiliated clinic in Frankfurt under local anesthesia. Depending on the type of eyelid lift, Dr. Nichlos makes fine incisions on the upper or lower lid. The incisions follow the anatomically given creases, so the fine scars generally heal inconspicuously.

Once the skin incisions have been made, the specialist carefully separates the top layer of skin from the subcutaneous tissue and muscle and removes the excess skin. If necessary, as part of the eyelid lift in Frankfurt he also removes excess fatty tissue or redistributes it. At the end of the procedure, the wound is closed with a very thin thread.

For the eyelid lift in Frankfurt, you should plan on about 45 minutes to 2 hours.

Aftercare

Healing after the eyelid lift: What you should keep in mind

Immediately after the eyelid lift, you can gently cool the area around your eyes (cooling pad or cooling mask) so that swelling subsides faster. Avoid straining, rubbing or pressing your eyes. If possible, avoid eye makeup until suture removal after about a week so that no fine particles get into the still fresh wound. You should also not use creams and ointments in the first two weeks after your eyelid correction.

Keep your head as elevated as possible in the first few days and give yourself rest. Avoid sports and other physical exertion for at least 2 weeks and protect your eyes well from UV radiation during this time (direct sunlight, tanning beds). Outdoors, it is best to wear good sunglasses with high UV protection.

Risks

What are the risks of an eyelid lift?

An eyelid lift is a surgical procedure and is performed by Dr. Nichlos as a specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery. As with any operation, there is a general risk of redness, swelling, bleeding, wound healing disorders and infections, as well as temporary numbness in the surgical area.

In addition, after an eyelid correction, dry eyes, a feeling of pulling or tightness when blinking and difficulty closing the eyelid can occur in rare cases. These side effects, too, are usually temporary and subside again during healing.

Very rarely, complications such as unwanted scarring, excessive tightening of the eyelid skin (overcorrection) or overstimulation of the tear ducts occur after an eyelid lift, which can lead to frequent tearing or increased dry eyes. The risk of these complications can, however, be reduced to a minimum by choosing an experienced surgeon such as Dr. med. Nichlos and by following the instructions after the operation.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the eyelid lift in Frankfurt

That depends on whether the upper and lower eyelids are treated separately or together. Depending on the procedure, you should plan on about 45 minutes (upper eyelid) to 2 hours (lower eyelid). Dr. Nichlos will go over the exact procedure with you in the preliminary conversation.

The result of an eyelid lift is long-lasting, but the natural aging process continues. For most patients, the fresh, alert look lasts many years. How long the result lasts in your case cannot be predicted individually.

In purely aesthetic cases, the cost is not covered by health insurance. It is different if severely drooping upper eyelids demonstrably restrict the field of vision, in which case there may be a medical indication. Please note: Dr. Nichlos’ practice is a private practice without statutory health insurance accreditation and treats only self-pay patients and privately insured patients with a medical indication.

Right after the procedure, swelling and slight bruising are completely normal. Most of it subsides within the first one to two weeks. The final result becomes visible once all swelling has fully gone down, which usually takes a few weeks.

The cost depends on whether the upper and/or lower eyelid is treated. The upper eyelid lift starts at €2,900, the lower eyelid lift at €3,000, in each case plus clinic and, if applicable, anesthesia. After the consultation, you receive a cost estimate listing all items. You can find further prices on our pricing page.

If excess skin on the upper lid bothers you, for example with hooded eyelids, the upper eyelid lift is an option. Eye bags, dark circles or loosened skin under the eyes are treated with the lower eyelid lift. Sometimes the cause lies elsewhere: if the eyebrows have sagged, a brow lift may make sense. Dr. Nichlos will determine which procedure or combination fits your findings in the consultation.

As with any operation, swelling, bruising, bleeding, wound healing disorders and infections can occur, and rarely also dry eyes, problems closing the eyelid or unwanted scarring. You also need to take it easy for about two weeks and bear the cost yourself if the reasons are purely aesthetic. Skin aging continues after the procedure. Dr. Nichlos will inform you in detail about all risks beforehand.

Excess skin and fatty tissue on the eyelids can only be removed by surgery. Depending on the findings, treatments with hyaluronic acid may be considered as a complement, for example to fill in missing volume under the eyes. If an upper eyelid looks heavy only because the eyebrows have sagged, a brow lift may be the better solution. Dr. Nichlos will discuss with you personally what makes sense in your case.

After the procedure, you should rest your eyes and not strain, rub or press them. This includes not reading for long periods, working much on a screen or watching TV in the first few days. After an upper eyelid lift, the practice advises, for example, to leave computer work alone for about a week. How strictly you need to follow this in your case, Dr. Nichlos will tell you based on your findings.

The procedure takes place under local anesthesia, on request also under twilight sedation or general anesthesia. You feel the injection of the anesthetic for only a few seconds; during the operation, a sensation of pressure or slight pulling can occur. Afterward, a feeling of tightness and slight pain are possible, which can usually be relieved with over-the-counter pain relievers. If the pain is stronger or persistent, please contact the practice. You can find more about the course of treatment under the upper eyelid lift and the lower eyelid lift.

How quickly swelling and bruising subside is individual. Many people are socially presentable again after 7 to 10 days. The sutures are removed after about a week. You avoid sports and other physical exertion for at least 2 weeks. More details on healing can be found under the upper eyelid lift and the lower eyelid lift.
