Hooded eyelid removal with Dr. Nichlos: an alert look through blepharoplasty

Through natural skin aging, our skin loses elasticity. Collagen and elastin gradually decline, which is also noticeable around the eyes, especially on the upper eyelids. The eyelids can increasingly sink and form hooded eyelids, which are bothersome for cosmetic reasons because they make the facial expression look more tired and the eyes appear smaller, or because they restrict the field of vision.

With a surgical upper eyelid lift in Frankfurt, we can remove the loose, drooping skin, gently refresh your eye area, and help you achieve a more alert and younger facial expression and a wider field of vision.

To achieve a result that satisfies you in every respect, specialist Dr. Nichlos can also combine the surgery on your upper eyelids with a correction of the lower eyelids or other procedures. Schedule an appointment for a non-binding consultation now by phone or through our form!

What is an upper eyelid lift?

An upper eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fatty tissue from the upper eyelid. The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia and is one of the most common treatments in plastic and aesthetic surgery.

Specialist for upper eyelid lift in Frankfurt

Dr. med. Emmanouil Nichlos has specialized in upper eyelid lifts for over 17 years and has extensive experience in aesthetic eyelid surgery.

He places particular value on natural results, honest advice and personal care. Dr. Nichlos personally looks after freshly operated patients. In the first 24 hours after the operation, he is available to them for questions or problems.

Who is an upper eyelid lift suitable for?

The upper eyelid lift is suitable for patients who want to have the excess skin on their upper eyelids removed for aesthetic or medical reasons. Dr. Nichlos will gladly clarify with you at a personal appointment whether the procedure is suitable for you. In Frankfurt, we use the upper eyelid lift, among other things, for drooping upper eyelid skin (hooded eyelids), for a tired-looking facial expression, and for a field of vision restricted by the eyelids.

What upper eyelid lift methods are there?

The basic principle of the upper eyelid lift is always the same: Dr. Nichlos makes a fine incision along the natural eyelid crease and removes the excess skin through it. The differences lie in the details. They are also what makes the procedure so demanding.

Incision placement for the upper eyelid lift in the natural eyelid crease

Skin tightening only

For mild to moderate hooded eyelids, it is usually enough for Dr. Nichlos to remove only the bothersome excess skin. To do this, he places the incision so precisely in the natural eyelid fold that the scar usually heals inconspicuously.

Tightening with fat and muscle correction

If not only the skin but also the eyelid muscle has become lax, or if fatty tissue has additionally bulged forward, simply removing skin is not enough. In this case, the excess fat is removed or redistributed and, if needed, the muscle is tightened. For your upper eyelid to look defined and natural afterward, the experience of a surgeon like Dr. Nichlos is essential. Whether skin tightening alone is enough in your case or whether fat and muscle also need to be treated, Dr. Nichlos will gladly discuss with you in a personal consultation.

Can the upper eyelid lift be combined with other procedures?

Very much so. A combination often makes sense in order to achieve a harmonious overall result. Dr. Nichlos looks at your face as a whole and will gladly suggest possible additions. In Frankfurt, we often combine the upper eyelid lift with the following procedures:

Lower eyelid lift

The counterpart to the upper eyelid lift. Here, Dr. Nichlos addresses under-eye bags and other problems that make your eyes look tired and heavy. By combining the two procedures, only one anesthesia is needed and both eyelids can be harmoniously matched to each other.

Brow lift

What looks like a hooded eyelid at first glance does not have to be one. This is the case, for example, when your eyebrows have sunk and weigh on your upper eyelid or push it downward. Here, the lift alone is unlikely to lead to the result you want. This can only be resolved by a targeted correction of the brow position. Dr. Nichlos lifts the eyebrows, takes the weight off your upper eyelid and opens up your gaze.

Dr. Nichlos will gladly explain in person whether and which combination is an option for you.

What happens before the upper eyelid lift?

If you would like an upper eyelid lift, we first invite you to a non-binding consultation at our practice in Frankfurt. Here, Dr. med. Nichlos will examine your upper eyelids thoroughly and ask about your wishes and expectations for an eyelid correction. If there is nothing against surgery, the specialist will then present the different methods of hooded eyelid treatment and explain the procedure, the risks associated with surgical eyelid lifts, and the expected costs.

If you have questions of your own, you can of course ask them at any time. If you decide on the procedure, Dr. Nichlos will arrange a binding date for the surgery with you and explain the necessary preparations. These include avoiding blood-thinning medication for a few days before the operation and, if possible, avoiding alcohol and cigarettes, as these can impair wound healing.

Procedure

Upper eyelid lift in Frankfurt: How does the procedure work?

On the day of surgery, you come to the affiliated clinic. Here, Dr. Nichlos performs the eye surgery in modern operating rooms with the support of an experienced team. A hospital stay is not necessary. The upper eyelid lift is performed on an outpatient basis and usually requires only local anesthesia, so you can leave the clinic right afterward. The procedure takes about 45 minutes.

Once you are prepared for the surgery and lying comfortably, Dr. Nichlos precisely marks the incision line and the amount of excess skin to be removed. He follows the natural eyelid crease so that the scar usually heals inconspicuously. Once the anesthesia takes effect, he makes a fine skin incision along the marked line with a scalpel and carefully removes the excess skin. If necessary, fatty tissue is also removed or redistributed (for example in the case of hooded eyelids) and, where applicable, some muscle as well (if the eyelid muscle has become lax).

The wound edges are then carefully closed with very fine sutures and you can leave the clinic. Please follow our aftercare information, with which you can actively support healing and thus the later appearance of the result.

Aftercare

Healing after the upper eyelid lift: What to keep in mind

Swelling and redness are normal immediately after the operation and can be eased well with a cooling pad. Please wrap it in a cloth to avoid cold damage to the skin. If you have pain, you can use over-the-counter pain relievers from the pharmacy. If the pain is stronger and persistent, please contact us.

After the outpatient procedure, you should give your body enough time and rest to recover from the eyelid lift. Avoid stress and physical exertion, and also rest from computer work for about a week. In the first days after the procedure, you should also refrain from driving and reading.

To avoid inflammation, it is important that you do not apply makeup to your face, and especially your eyes, in the first days. The small particles can get into the wound and cause discomfort there. After the sutures are removed about a week after surgery, you can wear eye makeup again. In the first months after the procedure, please make sure you protect yourself well from UV radiation. It is best to wear sunglasses and use creams with a high sun protection factor around the eye area.

Risks

What are the risks of an upper eyelid lift?

Hooded eyelid surgery is a surgical procedure performed by an experienced specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery such as Dr. med. Nichlos. Despite expertise, gentle techniques and high hygiene and safety standards, risks and complications can never be ruled out 100%.

As a rule, however, discomfort after hooded eyelid surgery is minor. Most patients experience slight redness, swelling or hematomas in the treated eye area, which usually subside quickly on their own. In some cases, the skin around the eyes may also be more sensitive or feel numb for a short time. Both are usually only temporary and soon fade.

Rarely, wound healing disorders, inflammation, postoperative bleeding or infections occur after an upper eyelid correction. In individual cases, surgery on the eyes can lead to asymmetries of the eyelids. Dr. Nichlos pays particular attention to a symmetrical result, but asymmetries cannot be ruled out.

Cost

What is included in the price?

The total cost of an upper eyelid lift is made up of several components. These usually include:

  • detailed consultation (€100, fully credited if you go ahead with the treatment)
  • individual treatment planning
  • surgeon’s fee for the procedure
  • medical care during the treatment
  • aftercare and follow-up appointments

In addition, clinic fees apply, as the procedure is performed in a specialized clinic.

Many patients want to know before treatment what costs are associated with an upper eyelid lift. Since every eye area is individual, the exact price can vary depending on the findings and the extent of the procedure.

At our practice in Frankfurt, the cost of an upper eyelid lift generally starts at:

  • Upper eyelid lift: from €2,900

The exact cost depends, among other things, on how pronounced the skin laxity of the upper eyelid is and whether fatty tissue also needs to be removed or redistributed. After a personal examination, Dr. med. Nichlos prepares an individual treatment and cost plan in which all services are listed transparently.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the upper eyelid lift in Frankfurt

In principle, an upper eyelid lift makes sense when excess eyelid skin bothers you for functional or aesthetic reasons, regardless of age.

Most inquiries for an upper eyelid lift come from people aged 35 to 60. Those aged 35 to 40 usually want to counteract early hooded eyelids, while for the 45 to 60 age group, the most common patient group, hooded eyelids are often already more pronounced. In cases of genetically determined, severe laxity of the eyelid skin, an upper eyelid lift can also be performed as early as the mid-20s.

For purely aesthetic reasons, health insurance does not cover the cost. If heavily drooping upper eyelids demonstrably restrict your field of vision, there may be a medical indication. Dr. Nichlos runs a purely private practice without statutory health insurance accreditation: he treats self-pay patients regardless of the indication, and privately insured patients when there is a medical indication. The upper eyelid lift starts at €2,900 plus clinic and, if applicable, anesthesia. You can find more on the pricing page.

As skin ages, it loses collagen and elastin, becomes less elastic, and the upper eyelids can sink. Genetic predisposition and external influences such as frequent sun exposure also play a role. You can read more in our guide Drooping eyelids and impaired vision.

Excess skin on the upper eyelid can only be removed surgically. If the upper eyelid droops mainly because the eyebrows have sunk, a brow lift may be the better solution, including with botulinum toxin as a non-surgical option. Dr. Nichlos will assess in the consultation whether the skin or the brows are the cause in your case.

Despite modern surgical techniques, it cannot be prevented that scars remain after an upper eyelid lift. However, because the incision is placed in the natural eyelid crease, they usually heal inconspicuously. With careful scar care after your eyelid lift, you can further reduce the visibility of the surgical traces.

Normally, the result of an upper eyelid lift lasts 8 to 10 years. Depending on skin aging and other factors such as diet, stress and UV exposure, as well as alcohol and nicotine consumption, the skin around the eyes may loosen again earlier and make another eyelid lift necessary.

As with any surgery, swelling, hematomas, postoperative bleeding, wound healing disorders and infections are possible, as are temporary numbness or asymmetries of the eyelids. Scars cannot be avoided entirely, but they lie in the natural eyelid crease. The result does not last forever: the skin continues to age, so another lift may become necessary after some years. In addition, there are the costs, which you bear yourself without a medical indication.

You should not drive a vehicle immediately after the procedure. Once your field of vision is fully unrestricted and you are no longer taking any medication that affects your reaction time, driving is usually possible again after a few days. Dr. med. Emmanouil Nichlos will advise you individually on this.

Glasses can usually be worn right after the procedure. You should wait at least one week before wearing contact lenses, as the eyelids are still sensitive during this time. Dr. med. Emmanouil Nichlos will give you a precise recommendation.

Swelling and redness occur immediately after the operation and can be eased with a cooling pad wrapped in a cloth. For pain, over-the-counter pain relievers from the pharmacy help; if the pain is stronger or persistent, please contact the practice. How quickly the discomfort subsides is individual, and many people are back to social life after 7 to 10 days.
